FAQs

What is Date-Ability?

Date-Ability is an educational program designed to help adults with disability build the knowledge and skills to develop healthy relationships, make informed choices, and stay safe. The program covers topics including communication, dating, consent, boundaries, online safety, sexual health, and healthy relationships.

How is this program delivered?

This intensive version of Date-Ability is delivered across 4 days over 2 weeks, with each session running for approximately 4 hours. The program combines group discussions, activities, videos, practical examples and opportunities for participants to ask questions in a safe and respectful environment. A program overview is attached with the topics covered each day.

Who runs the program?

This program is supported by Possability and will be facilitated by Tegan from FS Academy FS Academy – Education Programs NDIS. Tegan is a qualified and experienced counsellor and sexologist with extensive experience.

How many people will be in the group?

Groups are deliberately kept small, between 8 – 12 participants. Keeping groups small allows everyone to participate comfortably while ensuring facilitators can provide individual support where needed.

Is this a dating or matchmaking program?

No. Date-Ability is an education program. Participants are not expected to date or meet potential partners during the program. The focus is on helping participants build knowledge, confidence and practical skills that they can use in everyday life and future relationships.

What if someone is already in a relationship? They are absolutely welcome. Many participants who attend are already in relationships or have been in relationships previously. Topics such as communication, boundaries, consent, conflict resolution and healthy relationships are valuable regardless of someone’s relationship status.

Will there be an equal number of males and females?

Not necessarily. Participants are not selected based on gender because Date-Ability is an education program, not a matchmaking or dating program. The aim is for everyone to learn, participate and build confidence—not to meet a partner within the group.

What ages are the participants?

Anyone over the age of consent is welcome to participate. There is no upper age limit. Our participants are most commonly in their 20s to 40s, although ages can vary. Where possible, we are happy to provide a general overview of the age range of participants attending a particular group.

What kinds of disabilities or support needs are represented in the group?

We welcome participants with a wide range of disabilities and support needs. While everyone is different, the majority of participants attend because they have a genuine interest in learning more about relationships, dating and personal wellbeing. The program has been developed by experienced registered counsellors and sexologists and has been designed to be engaging, accessible and suitable for adults with varying abilities. If you have questions about whether the program is suitable for a you/a person you support, we can discuss your/their needs.

I’m worried about the topics being discussed. Is the program appropriate?

We understand these topics can feel sensitive. The program is delivered by a qualified and experienced professional who creates a respectful, safe and supportive learning environment. Participants are advised at the beginning of each session about the topics that will be discussed. No participant is ever required to share personal experiences, and if someone feels uncomfortable at any point, they are welcome to step out, take a break or speak privately with the facilitator.

Can support workers attend?

Yes. We can provide Support Workers are very welcome to attend if you/a participant would like. Attendance is entirely the participant’s choice and based on their individual support needs. Usually about half of our group attend with a support worker.
