Community Achiever

Rebecca Astell, a determined and passionate disability rights campaigner, has been awarded the 2015 MAIB Disability Community Achievement Award.

Possability nominated Rebecca – an employee based in North West Tasmania – in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the community.

Rebecca has had more than her fair share of challenges, including living with Cerebral Palsy, early setbacks in education and discrimination in various settings. These experiences have made her all the more determined to achieve her goals and to help others do so too.

Possability CEO, Glenn Campbell, said Rebecca had  overcome many barriers and drawn on her lived experience of disability to benefit others.

“Her motivation, optimism and determination has seen her rise above many barriers to gain a tertiary education, employment, live independently, get married and contribute to the community through her volunteer work.

“She brings significant knowledge and insight to her work at Possability, has volunteered since 2007 with the advocacy group, Speak Out and has been an active campaigner for the National Disability Insurance Scheme.”

Congratulations Rebecca!
